- Scope and content:
- This fonds contains archival material produced by a number of archival creators (i.a. Electriciteitsmaatschappij der Schelde, Verenigde Energiebedrijven van het Scheldeland, Compagnie Électrique Anversoise, Elektrische Centralen voor Vlaanderen, Elektrische Centralen voor Vlaanderen en Brabant, etc.) eventually absorbed by Ebes, and as such the precursors of Electrabel. We find a number of subject files (consisting of correspondence and other documents) concerning the management of the different companies during the German occupation, anti-Jewish measures and the declaration of ‘Jewish property’. See files nos. 466, 2189, 2458, 2952, 3387 and 3526. We also point out several files concerning (requests for) funding of various organisations, produced by the secretariat of the Verenigde Energiebedrijven van het Scheldeland in the years 1956-1969. See no. 1748 (i.a. concerning the Amicale de Dachau) and no. 1759 (i.a. regarding Les Amis Belges de l’Université hébraïque de Jérusalem asbl).
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The society Ebes (1956-1990) was founded in 1956 by the holding Traction et Electricité (later Tractionel), following the process of concentration within the energy industry after the Second World War. It was composed of several power companies: Société d’Électricité de l’Escaut, Centrales Électriques des Flandres et du Brabant and Société d’Électricité de la Campine. From the 1970s onwards, Ebes was one of the three largest energy producers, next to its competitors Intercom and Unerg. Since 1975 it operated the nuclear power plants Doel I and Doel II. Following the fusion of the two holdings Electrobel and Tractionel (1986), the three largest power companies Ebes, Intercom and Unerg merged to form Electrabel. (R. Brion & J.-L.
