- Administrative/biographical history:
- In 1895 Charles Charlier and Ivan Likhatschev became partners and established the Compagnie Mutuelle des Tramways (later renamed to Traction et Electricité, or Tractionel). The purpose of the company was the creation and operation of transport companies, in Belgium and abroad. The company expanded rapidly, by investing in more than fifty transport and lighting companies. To this end, Tractionel was backed by the Belgian Société Générale since 1910. Despite the setbacks suffered in Russia after the Revolution, the company recovered quickly and its capital grew exponentially. In 1986 it merged with Electrobel to form Tractebel (Compagnies Réunies Electrobel et Tractionel). (R. Brion & J.-L.
