Scope and content:: This archival fonds contains documents related to the activity of the Société anonyme d’Ougrée-Marihaye from 1900 until 1955, as well documents produced by its predecessors. This fonds does not contain archives of the various divisions of the company; it consists of the archives of the General Secretariat, of the bookkeeping department and of the Service minier (mining department) of the company. We notably point out the file no. 1039 titled “File concerning the relief provided to Jewish workers” (1944-1947).

Administrative/biographical history:: The société des Charbonnages et Hauts Fourneaux d’Ougrée (1829-1955) was founded in 1829. By 1836 the company owned two blast furnaces. Two more were acquired ten years later. The company’s name was changed in 1892 to become the Société anonyme d’Ougrée-Marihaye. It operated coal mines, iron mines and manganese mines, and produced and sold coke, pig iron, iron, steel and electricity. (A.-C.
