Scope and content:: This fonds mainly consists of correspondence of the Association des Israélites belges Victimes de l’Occupation nazie. We find correspondence with politicians and dignitaries from Belgium and abroad, with various Jewish organisations, Jewish periodicals and weeklies, etc. related to the announcement of the creation and mission of the association, and concerning international cooperation on the subject of compensation for Shoah victims.

Administrative/biographical history:: The Association des Israélites belges Victimes de l’Occupation nazie was founded in late 1964 - early 1965. Its headquarters was located at Brogniezstraat 159 in Brussels (Anderlecht). Among its board members were Roger David Katz (president), Jacques Poznanski (secretary), Salomon Albert and Henri Bauherz. The objective of the association was to represent the Belgian Jews and defend their interests, in the context of the Belgian-German negotiations concerning compensation for victims of the Nazi occupation. It campaigned in particular for compensation for Jews who could not be arrested and deported by the Germans and who had to live in hiding during the Occupation. The Belgian Jewish population was summoned to join the organisation. By March 1965 the association counted over 400 members. Its claim was eventually rejected, despite a number of parliamentary questions and a legislative proposal. The association was likely dissolved shortly thereafter.
