- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Landrat, created by royal edict of 30 April 1815, was the institution presiding a Kreis (a regional level of government). This body, of which the president also often bore the title of Landrat, was appointed by the king. The Landrat was assisted by local deputies in the Kreisversammlung. In the Kingdom of Prussia these regional levels of government were responsible for, among others, monitoring expenditures and accounts, the administration of poor relief, the educational system, various police-related matters, public health, etc. The Landrat was dissolved after the transfer of the Kreis Malmedy to the kingdom of Belgium (1919).
