- In this file we firstly note a (rather general) file on the Jewish Museum of Belgium in Brussels (no. 1731). We also note a large series of photographs of visual artists (nos. 2110-2198), including a number of Jewish artists – see Marc Mendelson (see list V13*, nos. 345 – 386), Maïo Wassenberg (V13*, nos. 460 – 480), Arie Mandelbaum (V13*, nos. 839 – 841) and Pierre Alechinsky (V13*, nos. 1590 – 1598).
- Administrative/biographical history:
- When the Ministry of the Flemish Community effectively started functioning in 1983, fine arts, sports and outdoor recreation were already among its 13 policy areas. In 1991, the ministry was subdivided into departments, including the department of welfare, public health and culture. In 2006 the Ministry of Culture, youth, sports and media was created in the context of the campaign “Beter Bestuurlijk Beleid” (‘better administrative management’). The Agentschap Kunsten en Erfgoed (‘arts and cultural heritage agency’), an internally independent agency of the ministry, is the successor to the former section of Fine Arts and Museums and of the section of Music, Literature and Stage Arts. Its mission is to promote and subsidise art, and to protect and valorise cultural heritage in Flanders.
