Scope and content:: In this fonds we find a large series of files related to subsidies for (visual) artists, among them a number of known Jewish artists – see i.a. Shmuel Blumberg (no. 255), Benni Efrat (no. 1338), Belu-Simion Fainaru (no. 1381), Sam Herciger (no. 1680), Idel Ianchelevici (no. 1805), Menashe Kadisman (no. 1905), Sarah Kaliski (no. 1906), Uri Lifshitz (no. 2165), Arie Mandelbaum (no. 2242), Marc Mendelson (no. 2324) and others. We also note two files concerning subsidies to organisations active in the broader field of visual arts, such as the Central Jewish Consistory of Belgium (no. 4101) and the Belgische Vrienden van de Hebreeuwse Universiteit van Jeruzalem (no. 4292).

Administrative/biographical history:: When the Ministry of the Flemish Community effectively started functioning in 1983, fine arts, sports and outdoor recreation were already among its 13 policy areas. In 1991, the ministry was subdivided into departments, including the department of welfare, public health and culture. In 2006 the Ministry of Culture, youth, sports and media was created in the context of the campaign “Beter Bestuurlijk Beleid” (‘better administrative management’). The Agentschap Kunsten en Erfgoed (‘arts and cultural heritage agency’), an internally independent agency of the ministry, is the successor to the former section of Fine Arts and Museums and of the section of Music, Literature and Stage Arts.
