- Administrative/biographical history:
- In the 19th century, the Belgian police was divided in two forces: the military and national gendarmerie on the one hand, and the local police on the other hand. Already in the 1870s demands for an autonomous judicial police were put forward. This service was finally created in 1919. Its missions ranged from infiltration and observation to gathering information from police informers – in other words, primarily repression of criminal offences and detection of violations of the law.
