- Archival history:
- After the ORT was wound up in 1950 the archives of its central board and local offices were transferred to the Central Committee of Jews in Poland (CKŻP) and, when this body was abolished in 1950, joined the Jewish Historical Institute collection. The original volume of the archive and details of initial ordering or rearrangement work and sorting out of the collection are unknown.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Established in 1880 in Russia, ORT was tasked with preparing the Jews for performing craftsmanship professions and agricultural labour. ORT was officially registered in 1906, its activities remaining limited to the territory of Russia until 1920. An office was opened in 1921 in Berlin and ORT has been international ever since. ORT initiated an initiative in Poland in 1923 to found Jewish farming and horticultural cooperatives. In March 1946 ORT started its postwar work in Poland, forming branches across the country. Jewish people were to be trained in craft-oriented and agricultural professions by means of schools (to be established), courses and training workshops; financial aid was to be provided to vocational training centres, job-oriented workshops and farmsteads, cultural events organised, knowledge promulgated (including through management of libraries, clubhouses and textbook editing and publishing). ORT was eventually dissolved based on a resolution of the general convention of ORT delegates on 29 October 1950 in Warsaw. The organisation resumed its activities in Poland in 1957 and pursued them until 1967. The headquarters of ORT’s World Organisation are located in Geneva.
