- Archival history:
- The records were accumulated by the Bankhaus Eichborn & Co. until 1945. In 1949 they were accessioned by the Wroclaw State Archive. In 1959–61, Dr Władysław Pyrek, Eryk Boryczka and Janina Michalska rearranged and inventoried the fund.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Eichborn & Co. was founded by Johann-Ludwig Eichborn in Breslau (now Wroclaw) in 1728. The business acquired the name ‘Eichborn & Co’ in 1766 and retained it until its dissolution. Initially, it functioned as a small merchant house which contributed to the development of transit commerce. The company traded in linen and canvas, wool, and wine. Later in the eighteenth century, its business focused on lending (crediting) operations. With time, Eichborn & Co. rose to become the best-known banking institution in Lower Silesia. The owners were very active in the field of economy as well as in the public domain. The company pursued contacts with the leading companies in a number of European cities: Amsterdam, Hamburg, London, Berlin, Vienna, Prague, Frankfurt, Krakow, Warsaw and elsewhere. It also did business outside in America and Asia. Throughout the nineteenth century, the shareholders established and maintained contacts with top military and civilian personages of Europe, who used the bank’s services. Eichborn & Co. had branch offices or subsidiaries in many Silesian towns and representatives in a number of European cities.
