- The fonds comprises the files and registers of the Calvinist High School Kuun in Orăştie from 1858 to 1925. It includes registers of correspondence with the county educational authorities, records of the School Council and financial records. 47 school registers have been preserved, which include details of each student in every academic year including the following information: name, date and place of birth, ethnic origin, religious affiliation, names, residence and profession of parents, school results in each subject and date of vaccination. The fonds also includes two registers of the commercial school that was attached to the high school from 1919 to 1923 and a register of student’s baccalaureate exam results. Orăştie had a Jewish community that in 1920 numbered 311 members out of a town population of 7,144 inhabitants. The proportion of Jewish students at Kuun High School was higher than that in the general population, rising to as much as 8-12% of the total number of the students.
- Archival history:
- After Kuun High School ceased its activity in 1925, its registers and files were transferred to the archives of Hunedoara. After 1950 they were included in the Hunedoara county directorate of the Romanian National Archives where they were inventoried and made available to researchers.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- A Calvinist school was founded in Orăştie in the 17th century as a branch of the college in Alba Iulia. A building from the period of the princes of Transylvania Gheorghe Rakoczi I and Michael Apafi was put at the disposal of the institution. In 1799 the school fell under the authority of the Superior Consistorium of the Calvinist church in Transylvania, which introduced a permanent teaching staff and appointed curators from the ranks of Calvinist aristocrats of the province. In the second half of the 19th century count Kocsard Kuun donated 50,000 forints to the High School, which received his name in 1877. The teaching language was Hungarian and the school functioned in accordance with the Austro-Hungarian legislation concerning confessional schools. After the First World War a commercial school with Romanian teaching language was attached to the high school. Its activity was reorganised in the framework of the Romanian legislation until 1923 when it was closed by the authorities.
