- Archival history:
- The fonds was preserved by the Jewish Community of Oradea. In 1968 it was transferred to the Bihor county directorate of the Romanian National Archives, inventoried and made available to researchers.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The registration of vital events by personnel of every religious denomination was introduced by the order of Emperor Joseph II. After the death of the emperor in 1790 this had only been implemented in a few places and only after 1850 did the registration of vital events by rabbis become general practice. Registration was carried out separately by the Orthodox and Neologue communities where such differentiation existed - in the case of Bihor county only in Oradea. The registers were initially in German but the Hungarian language was gradually introduced from 1867, becoming generally used in the following decades. Rabbinical registration was the only one until 1895 when state registration was introduced in every locality for inhabitants of all religious denominations by the registry offices created in the framework of the mayor’s offices. State registration was done in Hungarian until the end of the First World War and in Romanian after 1920. Rabbinical registration continued in the larger communities, especially in Oradea, even after state registration was prevalent.
- System of arrangement:
- The fonds includes registers arranged by localities. Within the registers the vital events are registered in chronological order.
