- Scope and content:
- The fonds comprises the files and registers of the Miron Constantinescu High School for Mathematics and Physics in Arad from 1929 to 1968. It includes records of the school council, provisions and circular letters of superior educational authorities, official correspondence, statistical data, scholarship files, material basis of the school activity and the status and payment of teaching staff. The school registers include details of each student in every academic year including the following information: name, date and place of birth, ethnic origin, religious affiliation, names, residence and profession of parents, school results in each subject and the final result of every grade. The catalogues record daily attendance of students in every grade and their marks in each subject. The students were mostly Hungarian and Romanian, but in the inter-war period a Jewish community also existed in Arad. It had 5,356 members in 1920 while the census of 1930 registered 7,010 Jews in a total population of 87,662 inhabitants. The number of Jewish students generally followed the same proportion.
- Archival history:
- The fonds was transferred to the Arad county directorate of the Romanian National Archives, inventoried and made available to researchers.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The high school was established after the First World War in order to diversify the educational institutions under state direction with Romanian teaching language. It began its activity on 5 October 1919 under the direction of Lazăr Nichi. In 1924 it was divided into two sections with four gymnasial grades and four superior high school grades. In 1928-29 the high school system with 7 grades was introduced, while in 1935-36 the eight-grade organisation was reintroduced with two tracks, one literary and one scientific. After the Communist reform of education in 1948 10 grades were introduced following the Soviet educational model. The High School took the name the of Communist leader Miron Constantinescu. It specialised in mathematics and physics, also including a section for irregular students. This system lasted until 1989 when the fall of Communism put an end to both this organisation and the institution’s name.
