- Scope and content:
- The fonds comprises the files and registers of the Ioan Slavici High School in Arad from 1776 to 1968. It includes records of meetings of the School Council, commissions of inspections, correspondence with superior authorities in educational matters, plans of activity and reports at the end of each academic year, statistical data concerning the students and the teaching staff, records concerning the material basis of the school activity and pay-rolls of the personnel. The school registers include details of each student in every academic year including the following information: name, date and place of birth, ethnic origin, religious affiliation, names, residence and profession of parents, school results in each subject and the final result of every grade. The catalogues record daily attendance of students in every grade and their marks in each subject. The students were mostly Hungarian and Romanian, but in the inter-war period a Jewish community also existed in Arad. It had 5,367 members in 1920 while the census of 1930 registered 7,010 Jews in a total population of 87,662 inhabitants. The number of Jewish students generally followed the same proportion.

- The fonds was transferred from the Ioan Slavici High School to the Arad county directorate of the Romanian National Archives, inventoried and made available to researchers.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The first gymnasium in Arad was founded in 1762 and was subordinated to the School direction of Oradea in 1776. Teaching staff was supplied primarily by the Roman Catholic clergy until 1850 when the school became a state gymnasium. It had 8 grades. In 1868 the gymnasium was transformed into a high school organised in accordance with the Law of education No. XXXVIII issued by the Hungarian Parliament. After the First World War, under Romanian administration, it became the High School Moise Nicoară and was organised according to legislation issued by the Ministry of Education led by Constantin Anghelescu, which focused on Romanian as the language of instruction. The Communist reform of education changed the school to the Ioan Slavici High School. This name, adopted in 1957, was preserved until 1991 when the old name of Moise Nicoară High School was reestablished.
