- Scope and content:
- The fonds comprises the files of one of the most important industrial enterprises from Arad - the Textile factory of Arad - from 1908 to 2003. It includes records of the meetings of the assembly of shareholders (amongst whom were a considerable number of Jews), data concerning the evolution of the production and its diversification, social insurance for employees, construction of lodgings for them as well as cultural and sport activities. The fonds also includes lists of workers and of technical staff. For the years of the Second World War, when the factory was mobilised to ensure the war necessities, especially for the army, documents are preserved which deal with the antisemitic restrictions against Jewish members of staff and Jewish employees. See Files No. 24/1940 - list of Jewish staff members fired and replaced with Christians; 26/1940 - list of employees according to their ethnic origin; File 33/1942 - applications of Jewish employees for adjourning their dismissal.
- Archival history:
- The fonds was preserved by the Textile Factory from Arad until its liquidation in 2004 when it was transferred to the Arad county directorate of the Romanian National Archives, inventoried and made available to researchers.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The textile factory of Arad was founded under the name "Hungaria" in 1909. Its buildings were finished in 1910 and production began on 15 May 1911, focusing on cotton products. In 1920 it changed its name to Textile Industry Arad and developed rapidly, the number of its looms increasing from 300 to 1500 in 1929. The products were sold in Cluj, Craiova, Timişoara, Constanţa and Braşov. During the crisis and depression from 1929 to 1932 one of the largest strike actions in Romania took place here in 1932. During the Second World War the the activity of the enterprise was subordinated to the country’s war efforts and met with considerable difficulties because of a lack of raw materials and the bombardments. The antisemitic regulations deprived the enterprise of its valuable Jewish technical and working personnel. In 1948 the Communist regime nationalised the factory which became a state enterprise under the name Textile Factory 30 December Arad. In 1989 it was reorganised, but diminishing production and personnel eventually led to its liquidation in 2004.
