- Scope and content:
- The fonds comprises the files of the factory for the processing of sugar beet in Arad from 1923 to 1980. It includes the records of the general assemblies of shareholders, correspondence with official county authorities and the Ministry of Food Industry, statutes of the internal rules of the factory, reports of activity and technical information, statistics concerning the production of sugar beet and the results of its processing, personnel files of staff and employees, records of financial administration, budget sheets, registers of clients and creditors and records relating to plans for production and the modernisation of the enterprise. Among the shareholders, technical staff and workers are numerous Jewish individuals, who during the years of the Second World War suffered the effects of antisemitic legislation, especially restrictions due to the so-called Romanisation process of the ownership of industrial enterprises.
- Archival history:
- The fonds was preserved by the factory for the processing of sugar beet from Arad. After 1989 it was transferred to the Arad county directorate of the Romanian National Archives, inventoried and made available to researchers.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The factory for the processing of sugar beet in Arad was founded in 1925 as an anonymous society with a starting capital of 4.5 million lei and with a technical staff of 50 persons and 600 workers. It was authorised to lease and exploit the fields cultivated with sugar beet in county Arad. It was registered in the registry of commerce in Arad in 1932 under No. 474 and in the following year merged with the society Chitila from Bucharest which functioned in the same field of activity, resulting in a position of control over sugar production in Romania. In 1940 the factory produced 15-20,000 tonnes of sugar and during the Second World War it had an important role in furnishing the sugar necessary for the army. In 1948, after the Communist regime was installed, it was taken over as state property and continued in this framework until the fall of Communism in 1989.
