- The fonds comprises the files issued by the administration of Aradul Nou prefecture from 1941 to 1950. It includes records concerning the local administration, the agrarian reform of 1945, valuing of fields which were taken over by the state, the status of local craftsmen, taxes imposed, the nationalisation of industrial and commercial enterprises in 1948, provisions against desertion from the army and those enrolled as volunteers in the Waffen SS, and data concerning local educational institutions. Jewish references appear in the files connected with the antisemitic provisions during the Second World War (Files No. 1/1941; 2/1941), expropriations during the agrarian reform of 1945 (Files 9/1945; 10/1945), the nationalisation of industrial, commercial and financial enterprises in 1948 (File No. 22/1948). In the tax list of local craftsmen individuals of Jewish origin also appear frequently.
- Archival history:
- The fonds was preserved by the Local Council of Aradul Nou. After 1989 it was transferred to the Arad county directorate of the Romanian National Archives, inventoried and made available to researchers.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The administration of Transylvania was reorganised after 1920 in the framework of Greater Romania. The law of unification of local administration from 14 June 1925 introduced the division of counties into prefectures, with Arad county having 10 such administrative subdivisions including Aradul Nou. The responsibilities of the prefectures include the supervision of the administration of its component localities, tax administration, control of educational institutions and the registration of vital events. During the Second World War the local administration was involved in the implementation of the official policy concerning the country’s war effort, military draft and antisemitic legislation, especially with regards to Jewish properties and forced labour detachments. In 1945 the local administration was in charge of the new agrarian reform, expropriating properties larger than 50 hectares and distributing them first to those returned from the war. In 1948 another important task of the local administration was the implementation of the law of nationalisation imposed by the new Communist regime. The administrative system lasted until 1950 when a new model was imposed based the Soviet one.
