- Scope and content:
- The fonds comprises the files of the Tobacco factory of Arad issued from 1921 to 1977. It includes documents concerning the organisation, production, accounts and personnel of this company, which represented the first industrial building of the city of Arad inaugurated in the middle of the 19th century. Initially it functioned as a centre for collecting the tobacco cultivated in Arad county, where the natural conditions were favourable for such a lucrative enterprise. Jewish entrepreneurs were involved in it especially since the end of the Austro-Hungarian period of time. During the inter-war period tobacco manufacturing and commerce became a state monopoly but Jews were heavily involved in its administration. After the Communist regime was installed, the factory was nationalised and continued to function with a different organisational structure.
- Archival history:
- The fonds was preserved by the tobacco factory of Arad. After 1989 it was transferred to the Arad county directorate of the Romanian National Archives, inventoried and made available to researchers.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Arad country offered good conditions for the cultivation of tobacco. In 1860 a centre was established in Arad for the collection of its harvest and its preparation, which functioned until the end of the First World War in the framework of the state monopoly on tobacco fabrication and commerce. In the inter-war period the Romanian state monopoly controlled this business, but the production and trade was leased to private entrepreneurs including Jewish businessmen. In 1949 the centre of collection was transformed into a tobacco factory with 442 employees, which annually processed 3,000 tonnes of fresh tobacco, which was transferred to the cigarette factory in Timişoara. In 1965 the production increased to 5,000 tonnes and the factory was subordinated to the General Direction of the Tobacco Industry in the framework of the Ministry for Food Industry. In 1970 it was organised as a Combine of the industry of tobacco and beverages, which was subordinated in 1971 to the centre for the cultivation and processing of tobacco until the fall of the Communist regime in 1989 when tobacco enterprises were privatised.
