- Administrative/biographical history:
- Prosecutor’s offices were organised in the framework of the general reorganisation of the legal system in Greater Romania after the First World War. Their main responsibility, together with the courts of justice, was to assure the application of law and respect in a unitary way in all historical provinces with different legal traditions and previous models of judicial organisation. The law issued on 24 June 1924 and the law concerning legal procedure assured the framework for the activities of these offices as guarantees of the legal state. Their democratic character was damaged first by the royal dictatorship established in 1938 and especially by the dictatorship of general Antonescu during the Second World War when the prosecutors became instruments of the antisemitic policy of the regime. In 1945 the inter-war system was reestablished for several years before the new Communist regime also used the prosecutor’s offices as instruments of their dictatorship.
