- Scope and content:
- The fonds comprises the files of the council of administration of the stocking factory of Arad, which was founded on 4 February 1938 and existed until 1948, when it was nationalised by the Communist regime. The files contain the records of the council of administration, the general meeting of shareholders, the committee of censors concerning the ownership of the factory, production, raw materials, machinery, losses suffered during the bombardments and military operations of 1944 and inventories from the expropriation of the enterprise by the state in 1948. The factory owners until 1 February 1939 were the Jewish entrepreneurs Pavel and Petru Stern, who were forced to hand it over to the Romanian Simion Albu. The commercial director was Iakob Czuckermann even if the council of administration was filled with non-Jews because the company had contracts with the Romanian Ministry of Defense during the Second World War.
- Archival history:
- The fonds was transferred to the Arad county directorate of the Romanian National Archives, inventoried and made available to researchers.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The stocking factory of Arad was founded on 4 February 1938, registered as no. 764 by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Arad. It was a Jewish firm owned by the Stern brothers producing stockings and later knitwear, obtaining important contracts for the Romanian army. The number of workers increased to 51 in 1943, while in 1946 68 persons worked there. The factory had important contacts with other enterprises and economic actors in the county, After antisemitic legislation came into effect, the ownership was transferred to Romanian staff, but the commercial activity continued to be directed by Jewish personnel. The factory suffered heavy losses during the bombardments of 3 July 1944 and in September 1944 when heavy fights between the Hungarian and Romanian armies took place in the region. After 1945 the activity of the factory continued, but in a reduced manner. It was finally taken over by the state under the law of nationalisation of industrial enterprises on 11 June 1948 by the newly established Communist regime.
