This fonds comprises the files and registers of the mixed gymnasium of Lipova from 1874 to 1938. It contains the records of meetings of the council of teaching staff, registers of official correspondence with superior educational authorities and the register of issue of diplomas. The annual registers include for each student their name, birth date and birth place, their ethnic origin and religious affiliation, the name, residence and profession of their parents and their results in school subjects, including the final result of every grade. The catalogues record the presence of every student and their marks for every day of the academic year.
The students were mostly Romanian, Hungarian and German, but also include Jews. In 1910 the Jewish community of Lipova numbered 381 members out of a total population of 7,427 inhabitants, in 1920 there were 370 Jewish inhabitants out of a total population of 10,499 persons, while the census from 1930 registered 273 Jews in a population of 9,877. The number of Jewish students at the school reflects these proportions.
- Archival history:
- The fonds was originally held by the school inspectorate of Arad. It was transferred to the Arad County division of the Romanian National Archives, where it was inventoried and made available to researchers.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Hungarian Town School for boys was founded in Lipova in 1874 and from 1887 shared both a building and a common board of directors with the Superior Commercial School. The language of instruction was Hungarian and the teaching program was in accordance with the Hungarian educational system. After the First World War it was reorganised by the Romanian administration first into a gymnasium for boys and then a mixed gymnasium with Romanian as the teaching language. On 1 September 1938 it was unified with the Commercial High School of Lipova and ceased to exist as an autonomous educational institution.
