This fonds comprises the files and registers of the Hungarian Pedagogic Mixed School of Carei from 1949 to 1954. They include registers and catalogues, dispositions and instructions of the superior educational authorities, circular letters, plans of activity, statistical data, reports, registers of the teaching staff, diplomas issued by the institution and correspondence registers. The annual registers include for each student their name, birth date and birth place, their ethnic origin and religious affiliation, the name, residence and profession of their parents and their results in school subjects, including the final result of every grade. The catalogues record the presence of every student and their marks for every day of the academic year.
The students were mostly Hungarian, but they also include Jews as there were still 361 Jewish inhabitants out of a total population of 16,780 in Carei in 1956.
- Archival history:
- The fonds was originally held by the school inspectorate of Satu Mare. It was transferred to the Satu Mare County division of the Romanian National Archives, where it was inventoried and made available to researchers.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Hungarian Pedagogic Mixed School of Carei started its activity in the academic year 1949/1950 in accordance with the reform of the educational system introduced by the newly installed Communist regime. It included 11 grades: 4 elementary, 3 gymnasial and 4 pedagogic ones. In the first year it had 132 students mostly from the town and its surroundings, but also from other parts of the country. The language of instruction was Hungarian and those who finished their studies here obtained diplomas permitting them to teach in the Hungarian elementary schools. The grades were mixed (boys and girls) in accordance with the principles of the new educational model. It was planned to add a boarding school but it seems that in 1954, when the school ceased its activity, this objective had not been fulfilled.
