- Scope and content:
- This fonds comprises the records of the Academy for Music and Dramatic Art of Satu Mare from 1932 to 1954. They include student registers, certificates, reports of the didactic and artistic activities, exam records, correspondence registers, rules of the institution, budget sheets, payrolls and files of the professors. The registers include for each student their name, birth date and birth place, religious affiliation and ethnic origin, the name, residence and profession of their parents and their school results for every year of study. The number of Jewish students and professors is considerable, reflecting the large Jewish community in Satu Mare. The census of 1930 registered 10,713 Jews out of a total population of the town of 53,010. They were accepted without restrictions until 1940 when the numerus clausus was introduced. After the Holocaust, there were still a number of survivors in Satu Mare. In 1956 2,391 Jews lived in the city.
- Archival history:
- The fonds was originally held by the music school of Satu Mare. It was transferred to the Satu Mare County division of the Romanian National Archives, where it was inventoried and made available to researchers.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Academy of Music in Satu Mare was founded in 1903 with the support of the city government. It continued its activity after the First World War, being considered since 1925 an institution of university character with right to issue diplomas. It was initially supported by the town hall, while after 1929 it became a private institution under the authority of the music association "Vasile Lucaciu". From 1930 to 1947 its director was Adrian Demian. In 1940, when Northern Transylvania fell under Hungarian administration, the Romanian professors and students took refuge in Aiud in Southern Transylvania, while in Satu Mare a Hungarian Academy of Music continued to function. After 1945, under the reinstalled Romanian administration, the Academy returned to its former direction. In 1947/1948 its name was changed to Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts before in 1954 the Communist regime transformed the Academy into the so-called Popular School of Arts.
