This fonds comprises 7 registers and catalogues of the industrial and commercial school for apprentices of Târgu Lăpuş from 1907 to 1914. The annual registers include for each student their name, birth date and birth place, their ethnic origin and religious affiliation, the name, residence and profession of their parents and their results in school subjects, including the final result of every grade. The catalogues record the presence of every student and their marks for every day of the academic year.
The students were mostly Hungarian, but there was a considerable Jewish community in Târgu Lăpuş. According to the census of 1910 it numbered 658 members out of a total population of 2,671 inhabitants, and the number of Jewish students at the local school for apprentices reflects this proportion.
- Archival history:
- The fonds was held by the School Inspectorate of Baia Mare before it was transferred to the Maramureş County division of the Romanian National Archives where it was inventoried and made accessible to researchers.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The industrial and commercial school for apprentices was established in Târgu Lăpuş in 1907 in accordance with Law XVII adopted in 1884 by the Hungarian parliament concerning the schooling of the apprentices of craftsmen and merchants, who were obliged to enter their apprentices into such schools. The school was started here because Târgu Lăpuş was the most important centre for crafts and trade in the so-called Lăpuş area of Maramureş county. The Jewish population represented an important part of the economic life of the area and this is reflected in the presence of Jewish apprentices in the school registers and catalogues.
