This fonds comprises the files and registers of the rural court of Şomcuta Mare from 1856 to 1967. It contains cadastral registers from 1856 to 1942 with details of the real estate properties from the localities which were under the jurisdiction of the rural court of Şomcuta Mare, including tabulations of such properties and other immoveable goods, sales and purchases of such properties, foreclosures, expropriations and successions. The most important changes in these properties appeared as a result of the agrarian reform of 1921. The registers include alphabetical indices, lists of owners, records of the decisions of the court in matters of real estate and situations concerning the woods and vineyards. A significant proportion of the owners are Jewish, affected considerably by the expropriations carried out after 1921 and then by the antisemitic legislation introduced from 1940 by the Hungarian administration.
The fonds also contains registers of decisions in criminal and civil cases from 1898 to 1951, with alphabetical indexes, notarial tax registers and registers of correspondence. Jewish litigants appear frequently in these cases.
- Archival history:
- The fonds was held by the court of Baia Mare before it was transferred to the Maramureş County division of the Romanian National Archives, where it was inventoried and made accessible to researchers.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Before the First World War the court in Şomcuta Mare was organised in accordance with Austro-Hungarian legislation. Its responsibilities included, amongst other aspects, decisions in cases concerning real estate and to organised the registration of immobile goods in the cadastral registers. After the First World War, in the framework of the Romanian judicial system, the rural court of Şomcuta Mare was established, which functioned until 1940 when the reinstalled Hungarian administration reintroduced the pre-First World War system. After 1945 the interwar Romanian judicial system was re-established until 1948 when the Communist regime abolished the institutions from the previous period and radically reorganised the legal system in Romania. The rural court of Şomcuta Mare ceased its activity in 1968.
