This fonds comprises the records of the Greek-Orthodox parish of Poienile Glodului from 1789 to 1960. It includes texts of sermons, announcements to parishioners concerning religious events, records about the real estate and other possessions of the parish, the administration of its income and payments to official authorities.
The following files contain specific Jewish references: no. 8 - contract of a loan obtained by the parish from a Jewish moneylender from Botiza (26 February 1826); no. 9 - the Jewish inhabitants Moise Sendler, Isak and Mendel Itzkovits lease a piece of land offered by Vasile Vlad in order to use it for a cemetery (3 September 1832); no. 20 - circular letter of the dean’s office of Maramureş which communicates to the local parishioners that pubs and restaurants (many owned by Jews) are not permitted to be situated at a distance of less than 100m to the church and they must remain closed during the service (5 March 1890).
- Archival history:
- The fonds was held by the local Greek-Orthodox parish before it was transferred to the Maramureş County division of the Romanian National Archives, where it was inventoried and made accessible to researchers.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Poinelike Glodului is a village situated in the central-eastern part of Maramureş county, 50km from Sighet and 100km from Baia Mare. It was first mentioned in 1430 and according to local tradition it was founded by refugees during the invasions of the Tatars. Its Greek-Orthodox church was built in 1632 and its parishioners represented the majority of the inhabitants. A Jewish community appeared at the end of the 18th century, with its origins in Galicia (southern Poland) which had become part of the Austrian Empire. The relationship between the two communities was generally peaceful until the First World War, even if there were antisemitic aspects to the Greek-Orthodox church due to the tendency of Jews to assimilate to Hungarian society and culture. These tendencies became more pronounced in the inter-war period when the antisemitic legionary movement had the support of the Greek-Orthodox church. In May 1944 the Jews of Maramureş were deported to Auschwitz.
