- Scope and content:
- This fonds comprises the records of the district notary of Tăuţii de Sus from 1941 to 1944. It mostly contains records relating to properties expropriated during the agrarian reform of 1921 and lists of persons to whom this land was transferred. The records were used in the years between 1941 and 1944, when the Hungarian administration was reintroduced after the decision on the sharing of Transylvania between Hungary and Romania which had been arbitrated by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy (the “Second Vienna Award”), to restore the agrarian relations in northern Transylvania affected by the measures taken by the former Romanian administration after 1921. Among the estate owners whose properties were expropriated were several Jews, but the restitution was only concerned with Hungarian noble estate owners, because the Hungarian antisemitic legislation excluded the Jews from owning land as property.
- Archival history:
- The fonds was held by the court of Baia Mare before it was transferred to the Maramureş County division of the Romanian National Archives, where it was inventoried and made accessible to researchers.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The district notary of Tăuţii de Sus functioned between 1941 and 1944 in accordance with the Hungarian legal system, its main responsibility being to issue and authenticate records about real estate properties, contracts of sale and purchase, of mortgages and of leases. These relationships were influenced by the political factors due to the change of administrations in 1940 when northern Transylvania became again part of Hungary. The estate owners expropriated by the agrarian reform of 1921 tried to recover their properties which were distributed among the local peasants, which caused a lot of difficult procedures and conflicts. The situation was complicated by the introduction in northern Transylvania of the Hungarian antisemitic laws adopted in the interwar period which among other restrictions excluded the Jews from the ownership of immoveable properties.
