- Scope and content:
- This fonds comprises the records of the mayor’s office of the village of Boiu Mare from 1920 to 1969. It contains census records of the local population from 1945, census of the children born between 1945 and 1948, registers of births and marriages, marriage files and statements, records concerning adoptions and a list from 1949 of the beneficiaries of pensions for Communist activity in the interwar period. Other records relate to the administrative activities of the mayor’s office, decisions in the field of economic, social, educational and sanitary issues, budget sheets and payrolls of the office’s employees as well as registers of correspondence with the district and county authorities, instructions, circular letters, dispositions received and reports concerning their implementation. The agrarian reforms of 1921 and 1945 are documented in records concerning the expropriations of properties and their transfer to peasant families. Until the Holocaust the Jewish community made up around 2% of the population, which is reflected in the records and registers described above.
- Archival history:
- The fonds was held by the mayor's office of the village of Boiu Mare and was transferred to the Maramureş County division of the Romanian National Archives, where it was inventoried and made accessible to researchers.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The village of Boiu Mare was mentioned for the first time in 1405. Its wooden church was built in 1757 and restored in 1830. The village is situated in the southern part of Maramureş county, close to the border with Sălaj county. In 1920 the Jewish population was documented as 45 persons of a total population of 1945, while the 1930 census counted 38 Jews in 1964 inhabitants. After the Hungarian administration was restored in 1940 in Northern Transylvania, the 1941 census registered only 29 Jews, who in April-May of that year were gathered in the ghetto of Sighetu Marmaţiei and in May 1944 were deported to Auschwitz.
