- Scope and content:
- The fonds comprises the registers and files of the district notary of Ferneziu from 1938 to 1948. It contains nationality registers from 1938 (connected with the law of revision of the nationality rights of the Jewish population decreed by the Goga-Cuza government, the first antisemitic regime of inter-war Romania), census records from 1945 (which recorded the population of the area according to nationality, ethnic origin, religious affiliation, civil status, profession, age and residence), registers of entrance and issue of records, financial registers with income and expenses, building projects and contracts. This is one of the few fonds of district notaries preserved in Maramureş county.
- Archival history:
- The fonds was held by the court of Baia Mare and was transferred to the Maramureş County division of the Romanian National Archives, where it was inventoried and made accessible to researchers.
- Administrative/biographical history:
-
District notaries were established in inter-war Romania in accordance with law of 1925 on the administrative unification of the historical provinces that became part of the country after the First World War. They were reorganised in 1938 when the regime of the royal dictatorship of king Carol II introduced a new constitution and reshaped the structure of the administrative and judicial institutions of the country.
The district notaries of Ferneziu had authority over the localities of the district, with their main role being to mediate from a judicial point of view between the mayors’ offices and the district administrative authorities, with the right to supervise and control legislation. Their activity ceased during the Hungarian administration from 1940 to 1944. While they were restarted in 1945, the coming to power of the Communist regime in 1948 fundamentally reorganised the institution of the notary.
