- Scope and content:
- This fonds comprises documents from between 1775 and 1978, collected by the mining engineer Gheorghe Lenghel. The documents refer to the history of the mining industry in the Maramureş area and to the conditions of the miners’ lives. The most important piece of the collection is the manuscript of the mining counsellor Johann Sartori from 1775 concerning the history of the mining in Baia Mare and surrounding area from 1535 to 1751, based on 512 documents from the archives of the Royal Chamber for Mining in Kosice. Among the information in this fonds there is a lot of data on mine owners and leaseholders, many of whom were Jewish. Other records deal with the sanitary organisation and health problems of the miners from this region, mentioning Jewish physicians involved in these fields.
- Archival history:
- The collection was donated by the engineer Gheorghe Lenghel to the Maramureş County division of the Romanian National Archives, where it was inventoried in 2011.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The collector Gheorghe Lenghel was born in 1902 in Coruia, being a descendant of the chief physician of Chioar district and of the gold mines of Baia Mare. He studied in Dej, then at the Gheorghe Şincai high school in Baia Mare, finally obtaining an engineering diploma in Timişoara. Between 1928 and 1930 he served in the 7th military engineers regiment of Timişoara and then was employed by the Mica mining society from 1931 onwards. From 1939 to 1944 he was director of the mines in Cavnic and after the Second World War he held leading positions in different mining societies in Maramureş.
