- This fonds comprises records of the Greek-Catholic parish of Sălsig, relating to the administration of the belongings of the parish, the relationship with the local administration and the bishopric of Gherla, lists of members of the parish and the selection of priests during the Austro-Hungarian administration in the second half of the 19th century and during the Romanian administration in the two decades after the First World War. Of specific Jewish interest is file no. 16, which includes the case of conversion of Frieda Weisz from the ‘Mosaic’ confession to Greek-Catholic in 1916.
- Archival history:
- The fonds was transferred from the Greek Orthodox church of Sălsig to the Maramureş County division of the Romanian National Archives.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Greek-Catholic church appeared in Transylvania and Hungary after the installation of Austrian rule at the end of the 17th century, when the new administration attracted a part of the Romanian Greek-Orthodox population to the union with the Roman-Catholic church by offering those who accepted the four conditions of this union (most importantly the supremacy of the pope) a similar status to that of Roman-Catholic believers. Greek-Catholic bishoprics were established, amongst them that of Gherla with jurisdiction over the parishes among them being that from Gherla with jurisdiction over the parishes from Maramureş. In 1929 Greek-Catholic bishopric of Maramureş was established, based in Baia Mare. After the installation of the Communist regime, in 1948 the Greek-Catholic church of Romania was abolished, the priests and believers being compelled to join the Greek-Orthodox church. The Greek-Catholic church was authorised again after the fall of the Communist system in 1989.
