- Scope and content:
- This fonds comprises the records of the Roman-Catholic confessional gymnasium which belonged to the order of Minorites (Franciscans). It contains documents concerning the institution’s belongings, purchases of land, school registers and annuals issued by this institution. These registers include the names of the students, their birth place and birth date, religion, mother tongue and grades in their school subjects. The annuals provide information on the content of the teaching program, officially approved textbooks, activity reports of the professors and the students’ results at the end of every academic year. Jewish students appear in the registers, especially after 1850, with their number increasing until the end of the 19th century, reflecting the growth of the Jewish population of Baia Mare. As it was a mining town, the residence of Jews was officially forbidden there until the revolution of 1848.

- The material was preserved by the Roman-Catholic gymnasium of Baia Mare and its successor school institutions until 1957, when it was transferred to the State Archives of Baia Mare. It is now held at the Maramureş County division of the Romanian National Archives.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Roman-Catholic gymnasium of Baia Mare is the successor of early educational traditions in the town, including the so-called Schola Rivulina from the 16th century which prepared priests and teachers, and some of whose students continued their studies abroad at the universities of Heidelberg and Göttingen. In the 18th century the school was taken over by the order of the Minorite (Franciscan) monks and functioned as a confessional school institution until 1887, when it became as a Hungarian state high school until the end of the First World War. After the introduction of the Romanian administration in 1919 the school became the Romanian-language Gheorghe Şincai high school. Between 1940 and 1944 it was again a Hungarian high school. The Communist educational reform of 1948 transformed it into a Romanian-language state gymnasium.
