- Administrative/biographical history:
- The gendarmerie which existed before the First World War under the Austro-Hungarian regime was reorganised after 1920 when Transylvania became part of Romania. Its activity was regulated by a law issued in 1929 which installed inspectorates in every county, subordinated to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. In rural localities, gendarmerie posts were established, each with a chief and at least five officers tasked with maintaining public order and state security. The responsibilities of the chiefs were extended in 1939, especially regarding drafting and mobilisation of reservists. From 1940–44 the reintroduced Hungarian administration organised the gendarmerie on Hungarian model, after which the Romanian organisation was reinstated. In Sălaj County, the gendarmerie was based in Zalău, and the county had 10 sections and 52 rural posts. The gendarmerie was replaced in 1949 by the communist Popular Militia.
