- Administrative/biographical history:
- Middle Szolnok County is mentioned as early as the 14th century as having its own institutions and jurisdiction. Under Austrian rule in 1733 it became part of the Transylvanian Principality and contained one town and 141 localities. Under the 18th-century territorial reorganisation, it comprised two towns and 143 villages in four districts, with the county seat in Zalău. This system lasted until the revolution of 1848, after which a military administration was imposed for several years. Middle Szolnok County was restored in 1861 and lasted until 1876, when it was included in the newly created Sălaj County, which remained until the communist administrative reforms of 1950.
