- Scope and content:
- The fonds contains activity plans, monthly reports, statistics and correspondence with the Department of Cults on problems concerning the organisation and guidance of parish offices and religious communities, nomination of ecclesiastical personnel, inquiries concerning the Greek Orthodox, Calvinist, Lutheran, Roman-Catholic, Baptist, Neo-Protestant and Mosaic religions. It also includes the correspondence of the bishoprics and communities from Bistriţa-Năsăud county concerning appointment, transfer and dismissal of the personnel of parishes, churches and communities. Jewish records include those concerning the statute of one of the synagogues in Bistriţa, the situation of the Jewish cemeteries after the flood of 1970 and the nomination of a ritual butcher (File 3).

- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Department of Cults was established in 1970 as the central institution of the state administration for the implementation of the state policy on the organisation and activity of religion. Its tasks were the supervision and control of religious institutions, to propose the installation of new parishes and bishoprics, to establish their extension, to approve statutes and regulations elaborated by the different religious institutions, to authorise the founding of monasteries, to recommend for nomination the bishops and other religious leaders, such as vicars, counsellors, archpriests and canons, and to authorise the founding of institutions for the preparation of the ecclesiastical personnel. The Department had inspectors in every county who worked according to the instructions sent by the central offices and in coordination with other state institutions fulfilling their specific tasks.
