- The collection includes the files of war invalids, orphans and widows from the First and Second World Wars. The files comprise certificates and records concerning their family and medical status, death records, certificates of invalidity and financial issues. Jewish individuals appear frequently; for example, Ioana Grünfeld (file 2035) and Maria Schlesinger (file 4837).
- Archival history:
- The collection was taken over by local authorities in 1950, by the county directorate for social assistance in 1968 and it was finally transferred to the Romanian National Archives, Directorate of Bistriţa-Năsăud County. Inventories were created in 1988 and 2002.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The assistance for soldiers in the First World War and their widows and orphans was regulated by a Romanian law of 1919, which included determining who should benefit from pensions and assistance, the financial issues involved and the procedures. In 1920 offices were established in every county that dealt with these issues under the authority of the Ministry of War. The benefits accorded included pensions, fiscal advantages and free travel tickets. In 1922 these offices were moved to the authority of the Ministry of Health. They were abolished in 1948 by the new Communist regime, their responsibilities being taken over by the so-called local Popular Councils.
