This collection of photos reflects a variety of aspects of the past and contemporary life of the Omsk region. The most valuable part of the collection comprises photos, photo albums and greeting cards from 1861-1916 collected by members of the Western Siberian Imperial Russian Geographical Society (WSIRGS). These are archaeological and ethnographic pictures of the Akmola and Semirechensk areas of Central Asia and photographs of Siberian Cossack troops. Especially valuable are the photographic albums presented at different times to members of the imperial family.
The collection of the iconography of the city of Omsk has been gathered since the late 19th century and the most important historical events of the region are reflected here. The collection is diverse and includes reportage, views, personal pictures, single and group portraits and postcards and photos taken by professional artists and amateurs. The collection is actively replenished with postcards of views of Omsk and modern publications, negatives and photos.
The collection contains images of planning projects: city plans of the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries; an album of I.P. Dreiling with locations of synagogues and Jewish cemeteries; photos of old and new synagogues (1908, 1915, 1923 and others). Architectural subjects related to the history of Jews in Omsk include the house of A. Perakh, a plant of merchant M. Mariupolsky and the "Mariupol dugout" (slums where the workers of this plant lived) and the grave of doctor B.S. Weisbrod in the Cossack cemetery. Collective and personal portraits of Jews include: an unknown Jewish family in Tobolsk, the dentist A. Perakh, A.S. Kabalkin, Professor M.S. Rabinovich, head of the Jewish community in the 70s, I. Chesnitsky and literary critic E. Belenky (including graduate students of Smolensk Pedagogical Institute). There are also case photos: Jewish spies, Piaski, Poland (from the album of the 8th Siberian Cossack Regiment, 1914-1915). Another group contains portraits of Jews, attracted to the inquiry in the gendarmerie (more than 50 images from 1870-1905). The collection also includes an ethnographic album of the Kuldzhinsky district of Semirechensk from the last third of the 19th century, which presents photographic reproductions of Jewish types (seven images). In addition, the collection has extensive photographs by Jewish photographers including I.E. Kessler (with the picture "Meeting of Crown Prince Nicholas" he was awarded in 1891), I. Kadish, M. Frumgarts and E. Savin.
- Archival history:
- The collection dates from the establishment of the museum in 1878 and based on artefacts collected by members of the West Siberian branch of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society. After 1896 the museum was located in a separate building, its collections were given permanent storage and visitors were granted access to them. In 1921 the museum was located by the Geographical Society in an independent institution, the State Western Siberian Regional Museum. Part of the collection was damaged during the Civil War. The composition of the collection is constantly updated. In many cases, the source of income of the images is unknown.
