The sub-fond contains 5 archival series that contain around 500 hours of amateur film shot by Hungarian citizens between 1925 and 1985 on 8 mm film, mostly recorded in Hungary, with some footage from central and western Europe. The films document people's everyday lives - children, family holidays and celebrations - as well as some public, historic events as seen through private eyes, including the 1956 Hungarian revolution. The collection also contains the creative documentary films by film director Péter Forgács whose storytelling is largely based on the archival home movie collection as well as over 200 hours of oral history interviews recorded on audio cassettes with amateur filmmakers and with members of their families also form part of the sub-fonds.
The series contains 7 video files related to Jewish history and culture, all stored under the archival series HU OSA 320-1-2 Hungarian Home Movies. These are home movies produced in Hungary between 1910 and 2000. A set of home movies “Löffler Home Movies” (produced in 1930-1939) informs about Jews in Hungary during WWII and Hungarian Jewish traditions. A set of home movies “Tibor Török Home Movies” (produced in 1940-1962) informs about Jews in an unknown Hungarian city in WW II. A set of home movies “Tibor Török Home Movies” (produced in 1938-1935) informs about Sub-Carpathian Jews. A set of home movies “Miklós Gárdos Home Movies” (produced in 1938-1944) informs about Jews and other nationalities of Sub-Carpathia. A set of home movies “Nándor Andrásovits Home Movies” (produced in 1938) shows a boat journey of Jewish emigrants on the Danube to the Black Sea. A set of home movies “Andrásovits Home Movies” (produced in 1939) shows Jewish prayer and books in Hebrew. An Unidentified Home Movie (produced in 1944) shows Győr transportation of the Jews and evacuation of the Jews in 1944 from Western Hungary.
- Archival history:
- The records of the Private Photo and Film Foundation at the Open Society Archives are video copies of Hungarian home movies (amateur films shot on 8, super 8, and 9.5 mm), collected by Péter Forgács. As of 2019, all the film and audio recordings were digitized. As a result, the entire collection is accessible digitally at OSA's Research Room.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The home videos and other files in this collection were originally collected by film director Péter Forgács and his Privát Fotó és Film Alapítvány. Both the films and the related audio interviews were digitized at OSA in 2019 and are accessible in MP4 and MP3 file formats (respectively) at OSA.
