The sub-fond contains 9 archival series that cover textual and video materials related to economic, political, social and cultural issues in the USSR and, after its collapse, in Russia and newly independent states.
The material related to Jewish history and culture is stored in the archival series HU OSA 300-81-9 Video Recordings of Soviet and Russian Television Programs. The series contains circa 1500 hours of off-air recordings of Soviet and Russian television broadcasts recorded between 1985 and 1994. They include political, cultural, educational, military, sports and news programs, through which political changes in Russia reflected by the media in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The series contains 8 video files related to Jewish history and culture. These are releases of various TV shows that discuss Babi Yar (a documentary “Babii Iar: uroki istorii” produced by a Ukrainian studio and broadcast on 29 September 1986), capturing Adolf Eichmann by Israeli Intelligence service, Mossad, in Argentina (TV show “Chernyi iaschik” broadcast in 1992) antisemitism in 19th cent. town of Velizh (a documentary that takes part of the show “Dokumenty i sud'by” broadcast in February 1994), sheltering Jews in Ukraine in 1944 (a documentary that takes part of the show “Dokumenty i sud'by” broadcast in February 1994), TV debates on the status of Jews in the USSR (a show “Leningrad – Sietl: god spustia” broadcast on 5 April 1985), Jews from the Soviet Union emigrating to the US (a TV show “Telemost Leningrad-Boston”, broadcast on 17 July 1986 “Kamera smotrit v mir: byvshie”, broadcast 19 September 1986), and the status of Jews in the Soviet Union (TV show “Gelemost Leningrad-Sietl” broadcast on 19 February 1986).

- The sub-fond was transferred to the Vera and Donald Blinken Open Society Archives in May 1995 under the initial mandate to preserve over 2.5 linear kilometers of documents accumulated in the archives of the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty Research Institute.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The RFE/RL Monitoring Unit was responsible for monitoring press and media produced in the Soviet Union and newly independent states in 1979-1995. After 1992 the monitoring was produced on a contract basis. The archival material was processed and revised at the Blinken OSA in 2002.
