The sub-fond contains material (news agency releases and excerpts from foreign and Bulgarian press, newspaper clippings, transcripts of the Bulgarian National Radio, abstracts of media reports about Bulgaria, excerpts of RFE Research Reports, copies of articles from scientific publications, transcripts of telephone interviews by a journalist at the Bulgarian Section of RFE) collected by research specialists and analysts at the Bulgarian Unit of the RFE/RL Research Institute. The records of the Bulgarian Unit provide resources for the study of history of Bulgarian political and cultural life, economics, religions, media, and social issues during the Cold War period. Records regarding the problems of ethnic minorities, exile, foreign relations and the communist party of Bulgaria are of particular interest.
Materials concerning Jewish history and culture can be found in 2 folders dispersed throughout 2 archival series out of 8 that the sub-fond contains. This material informs about lives of Jewish communities in socialist Bulgaria (People's Republic of Bulgaria, PRB) from 1962 to 1992. 1) Archival series HU OSA 300-20-1 Subject Files 1 folder with information about Jews in socialist Bulgaria, 1962-1975 (under Zhivkov) collected from Bulgarian and foreign press. 2) Archival series HU 300-20-2 Subject Card Files contains 1 folder that informs about Jews in socialist Bulgaria, 1951-1992.

- The sub-fond was transferred to the Vera and Donald Blinken Open Society Archives in May 1995 under the initial mandate to preserve over 2.5 linear kilometers of documents accumulated in the archives of the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty Research Institute.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Bulgarian Unit was established as part of the RFE/RL Research Unit in order to collect and prepare for publication information and analytics about ongoing affairs and developments in socialist Bulgaria. Establishment of the RFE/RL was related to informational confrontation in the Cold War. The material was processed and revised at the Blinken OSA in 2000.
