- Archival history:
- The material was deposited in the National Archives by the Jewish congregation of Turku in 2008. It was organized in the National Archives of Turku in January-February 2008.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Jewish sports association was founded in Turku in 1908 as Judiska Idrottssällskapet; in 1923 the name was changed into Makkabé. The association published a bulletin Front-Karolina (after 1945 Makkabé). Its main activities were initially soccer and track and field, and after the Second World War, ball games, table tennis, tennis, bowling, and children’s sports. The women’s international Zionist organization WIZO has had an active branch in Turku from the early 1920 onwards. Officially WIZO Turku was established in 1946 and it is still in operation. WIZO organizations in Finland have given financial support to a day-care-centre in Shaviv, Israel, since 1960. It collects funds by holding events (bazaars, cultural events), by channeling sponsorships for children, and by private donations. Kadimah Zionist Youth Association was established in 1928 to promote Jewish culture and issues. Turku Jewish Women Society (Judiska fruntimmersföreningen i Åbo) was founded in 1922 and its main aim was to take care of community members in need, infirm members, and, during the war, Jewish soldiers on the front. In 1953 the association opened a holiday fund for women with limited means. Other associations in the collection include Achwa that was in charge of the club rooms of the Turku congregation, the Bridge Club, Clothing Factories Association from the 1930s, and religious study associations Talmud Torah and Chavera Shas. The only association still in operation is WIZO.
