The collection contains the records of the Sports Association Makkabi in Helsinki from 1920 to 2009. The collection is part of the Finnish Jewish Archives (Suomen juutalaisten arkisto; 630:114). The records cover major segments of the association's administration, including membership register, administrative and finance records as well as documents of various subsections of the association. The collection is divided into three sections (I, II, III), which reflects the various stages the collection has arrived in the archives and has been catalogued.
Section I (files 327-333) contains the membership register (1931-1994), proposals for decorations, minutes of annual meetings (1920-1984), minutes of the board and general meetings (1920-1983), minutes of supporting association (1967-1974), minutes of the founding meeting of the Finnish Jewish Sports Federation (Suomen Juutalaisen Urheiluliitto)(1927), and minutes of the joint committee of Makkabi in Helsinki and Turku (1954-1991). Besides these, section I contains documents of the Women’s Section (1931-1962), including minutes, rules, correspondence, membership lists, membership applications and resignations, documents of the Youth Section, including minutes, annual reports and camp reports, and the association’s annual reports (1920-1982) and correspondence (1921-1966).
Section II (files 1-16) contains the association’s minutes (1989-1994) and correspondence (1961-1994). The core of the section II contains documents of the Bowling Section. These include minutes (1954-1994), annual reports (1935-1995), correspondence (1954-1993), minutes of competitions and lists of contestants (1954-1992), including Makkabiads, Swedish-Finnish cup competition, Helsinki-Turku-Stockholm triathlon and competition of Helsinki Bowling Federation, awards, applications for financial support, accounting records, newspaper clippings, a chronicle, congratulations for the 50th anniversary and miscellaneous documents (1977-2007). Besides the Bowling Section there are records from other sections including minutes, competition and annual reports, lists of equipment and trophies, competition programmes and correspondence. There are also announcements and publications of the association, including Stjärnan, Sport och Nytt, Makkabi, and a memorial publication for the fallen Jewish soldiers and other chronicles (1921-1966), and accounting records from 1959 to 1978.
Section III (files 1-8) contains the membership register, minutes (1985-2005), miscellaneous historical material (1934-2006), including the 100th anniversary in 2006, guest book (1952-1953), documents from the Bowling Section and Football Section (1934-1935), and newspaper clippings and printed material (1920s-2009). Besides these there is a collection of photos from the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century, including photos from the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki and the 95th anniversary of the Sports Association Makkabi in 2001.
- Archival history:
- The records were kept in the Jewish Community of Helsinki until the mid-1990s, when they were deposited in the National Archives of Finland. There the collection was sorted and catalogued and opened to the public in 1998. Further additions to the collection were made in 2005–2006.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Sports Association Stjärnan (in Swedish Idrottsföreningen Stjärnan) was founded in Helsinki in 1906. The women’s section was established in 1931, and in 1934 the association changed its name to Sports Association Makkabi (in Swedish Idrottsföreningen Makkabi, in Finnish Urheiluseura Makkabi). The activity of the association has included gymnastics, athletics, skiing, cycling, wrestling, weight lifting, table tennis, tennis, squash, bowling, football, bandy ball and handball. During 1930-1931 the football section played in the national league. During the Second World War, when many of the members were on the frontier, the association published a journal called Makkabi. Of all the various sections, the activity of the bowling section has been the widest. The Sports Association Makkabi is still active.
