The collection contains the archives of the Finnish branches (Helsinki, Turku and Tampere) of the Women's International Zionist Organisation (WIZO ry) from 1926 until 1996. The collection is part of the Finnish Jewish Archives (Suomen juutalaisten arkisto; 630:244).
The records (files 1–17) contain the minutes of the association (1926–1932), minutes of the board (1950–1974, 1975–1988), the minutes of the annual meetings (1948–1986) and other meetings (1952–1977). They also contain annual reports and administration reports (1929–1989), facsimiles of sent mail (1929–1970, 1971–1987) and letters received (1930–1994), accounting records (1948–1987), lists of members (1946–1949) and received donations (1974–1981), as well as the minutes of the WIZO national conferences (1950–1983) and Scandinavian conferences (1952–1988).
There are also records of child sponsorship in Israel and fundraising for North African Jews in 1956 as well as documents concerning raffles and fundraising (1954–1987). There are also miscellaneous manuscripts from the years 1947–1985, including articles by Synnöve Isaksson-Schubak, a report on an international WIZO AVIV seminary in 1973, and a visit of the executive committee in Tampere in 1985.
The records of the Helsinki WIZO contain notices for the register of associations, anniversary congratulations, art exhibitions and a list of donations (1954–1996). The records from the Turku and Tampere WIZO include annual reports from Tampere (1955 and 1957) and correspondence, a membership list and annual reports from Turku (1956–1989). The records also contain various newspaper clippings from the years 1970–1981, printed material (Basar magazine from 1969–2004, advertisements for Mother’s Day lunches from 1965–1975, invitations, bulletins, and advertisements from 1934 to the 1960s), miscellaneous invitations, bulletins and advertisement from the 1970s and the 1990s, including the publications Juutalainen vuosi, Wizo Helsingissä 60 vuotta, Wizo Helsingissä 70 vuotta, and parts of the publication The Saga of a Movement: Wizo 1920–1970 by Fay Grove-Pollack (Tel Aviv, 1970) and photographs.
- Archival history:
- The records were kept in the Jewish Community of Helsinki until the mid-1990s, when they were deposited in the National Archives of Finland. The collection was catalogued during 2005–2006.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Women’s International Zionist Organisation is a politically independent organisation that supports women and children in Israel. The umbrella organisation was founded in London in 1920. The Finnish branches were founded in Turku in 1922, in Viipuri in 1924, in Helsinki in 1926, and in Tampere in 1950. The Viipuri branch was merged with the Helsinki branch soon after the war, and the Tampere branch was closed down in 1972. WIZO organisations in Finland have financially supported a day-care centre in Shaviv, Israel, since 1960. Wizo Finland collects funds via donations, by holding events (bazaars, cultural events) and by channeling sponsorships for children, organises courses for women and sponsors shelters for victims of domestic violence.
