- Administrative/biographical history:
- In 1921, Rabbi Israel Mattuck, Lily Montagu and Dr Claude Montefiore looked to establish a progressive Jewish congregation in north London and enlisted Rabbi Dr Maurice L Perlzweig in the same year to become lay minister of the congregation. The North London Progressive Synagogue had close links with the Liberal Jewish Synagogue and Rabbi Perlzweig was appointed Minister there in 1924 while still Minister at the North London Progressive Synagogue. The congregation throve, which led to the building of a new temporary synagogue at Belfast Road, Stoke Newington in 1927. Further increases in the size of the congregation led to a new synagogue being acquired at 30 Amhurst Park, Stoke Newington in 1946 and further new premises consecrated at 100 Amhurst Road in 1956. The synagogue closed in 2004.
