Please note that collections held by the National Archives of Ilfov are highly fragmented due to the fact that they were evacuated from inter-war Romanian territory coming under Soviet control at the end of World War II. The material was held by disparate branches of the national archives around the country until the post-communist period.
This collection is larger than most others (67 items), though this most likely represents only a portion of the original collection. The folders are arranged chronologically and titled with the names of the litigants; the object of the dispute and sometimes the location (presumably of the dispute) are also listed in the inventory. Please note that access to these files is likely highly restricted.
There are numerous Jewish names involved in the disputes, including Spiegel, Salomon Rosner, Macovei Sidur, Moses and Jacob Regenstreif, Amalia Aschenbrenner, Mordke Kirmaier, Hochstadt/Hogstadt, Kramer, Chaim Aberdam, Sama Laub, Viktor Klein, Iacob, Gușul, Gerșon Akerman, Maier Berl Grill, Moritz Sandler, Klara Rosenkrantz, Iacob Thau, Iacob Stein, Berl Mencze, Schulim Lehr, Simon Kamil, Cecilia Rosenwald, Jetti Streit, Iosef Orenstein, Sigmund Strobel and plenty of names less easily identifiable as Jewish. Note that many names seem to be spelled in uncommon ways, misspelled or difficult to decipher in the inventory.
Objects of dispute range from property to paternity to "money". Locations include villages throughout the administrative district of Storojineț. Handwritten notes in the inventory indicate that some of the earlier files are partly or entirely in German. Following the files of individual cases are seven files which appear to have been added to the collection at a later date. Their information is handwritten into the inventory. These files contain correspondence between the Storojineț district court and other regional courts such as the Cernăuți court of appeals, the prosecutor's office of the Storojineț central court (Parchetul Tribunalului Storojineț), the Storojineț central court (Tribunalul Storojineț) and smaller district courts. These files are all from 1944. Please note that time did not permit the surveying archivists to examine the contents of individual folders and thus no specific details can be given as to Jewish-related material, but in light of the significant Jewish population in the region and the relatively unknown nature of these holdings, almost all material originating in Bukovina is included in the present catalogue.
Please note that, at the time of the survey, inventory numbers were not in use at the Ilfov archives. The inventories of collections from northern Bukovina were arranged by (interwar) county in folders. Numbers were pasted onto the cover, but archival staff did not treat these as inventory numbers, nor were they used to locate the inventories. These numbers are, however, provided here, in case protocol changes in the future.
- Archival history:
- This material was most likely evacuated from Cernăuți during or shortly after World War II. It appears to have been initially processed (in 1997) and maintained by the Iași branch of the National Archives. It was then transferred to the Ilfov branch of the National Archives in the course of measures to centralise documents from territories that are no longer part of Romania.
