- Scope and content:
- The archival collection of the Arad Jewish community is unprecedented in scope for the region. It encompasses documents from the late 18th century testifying to the first Jewish families in Arad, including documents signed by the then-revolutionary reformist Rabbi Aron Chorin, to the period of World War II and the era of mass emigration following the war. The collection is divided into nine series based primarily on genre. Thus, there are seven series of registers, which form by far the largest part of the collection. The registers record a range of data from accounting figures for an array of community institutions (orphanages, schools, chevra kadisha, etc.) to civil records, minutes of meetings, and names of members. Most of the registers are in Hungarian but the oldest series (Series V) contains registers kept almost exclusively in Judeo-German, Hebrew, or German. There are two series of documents, which were likewise separated largely on language lines, this reflecting a cultural shift within the community. Thus Series VIII, with documents from 1717-1873 contains documents primarily in Judeo-German, German, Hebrew, as well as Hungarian; these documents are also of larger size and in over-sized document boxes. In contrast, the documents in Series IX range from 1873-1949, and though initially some documents are still in German, the vast majority are now in Hungarian and, after World War I, to an extent in Romanian. For details on the contents of each series, please see the respective scope and content note in the finding aid.

- Finding aids:
- The complete finding aid is available on the project website of the Leo Baeck Institute. Please note that time did not permit Leo Baeck Institute archivists to examine each file in detail; rather we worked with an extant inventory of archival material from 1988. Where required we sought to describe the files in greater detail than that which was provided in the inventory but without exception we did not remove documents from folders in which they were found.
