- Scope and content:
- These registers, the bulk of which were created between 1924 and the mid-1940s, appear to deal with the resolution of citizenship issues which arose during the pre-World War I and interwar periods as Romania gained and lost various territories. The registers typically consist of names of individuals (usually men), sometimes with some basic vital information, and are frequently accompanied by the names of wives and children. They rarely provide information about nationality or ethnicity, but in some cases do record a case or file number relevant to the individual's (or family's) acquisition of Romanian citizenship. Such is the case with one of the Mediaș registers, which records a number of individuals, many Jewish, whose birth place is given as Bukovina, Bessarabia or various other territories that were formerly part of the Austro-Hungarian and Russian empires. Notably, this Mediaș register is accompanied by a partially contemporaneous register of individuals, all of whom appear to have been born in Mediaș or the region. A couple of entries for Jews are crossed out as invalid. For details on these registers, see the entry for this collection at http://jbat.lbi.org/, subfield ‘contains’, and click on any title.
