- The fonds includes E. M. Peshchereva’s field materials and research works (1863-1961); reviews of her work (1951-84); biographical documents (1914-80); correspondence (1927-88); and materials of other persons (1895-1940). Pertaining to Jewish history is a “Table of works submitted on the Kalandar-Lokinsk section and the Jewish quarter of the native section of the city of Samarkand,” which indicates the number of Jews by city district (1920).
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Elena Mikhailovna Peshchereva (1897-1985) was an Orientalist and ethnographer. In 1916-17, during the First World War, she served as a frontline nurse. In the years 1917-18, she worked as a teacher in a children’s shelter in Tashkent. In 1924, she graduated from the ethnolinguistics department of the Turkestan Oriental Institute in Tashkent. During her studies, she took part in expeditions of the Commission to Study the Indigenous Population of Turkestan. From 1924 to 1928, she worked as a research associate of the Main Central Asian Museum, and engaged in research and collection activities. In 1929, E. M. Peshchereva was invited by V. V. Bartold to join the staff of the State Academy of the History of Material Culture (GAIMK) in Leningrad; and she subsequently taught at Leningrad State University and was a research associate of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In July 1947, she defended a thesis on the subject of “Women’s Pottery Production,” and in 1959 published a monograph titled Pottery Production of Central Asia. She received her habilitation degree in 1960.
