Most of the documents in this fonds that pertain to the history of Jews in this region date from the late 19th and early 20th century and are connected with the activities of Jewish community institutions of Galicia:
1) The fonds contains the charters of particular communities, minutes of meetings, and cash books and budgets: for example, the charter of the Jewish religious community of Drohobycz (1918); the charter of the Jewish religious community of the town of Otynia (1904); materials on the founding and amendment of the charter of the Jewish religious community of Przemyśl (1897-1914); the budget of the Jewish community of the town of Jezierna (Oserna/Ozerna), and correspondence on the collection of taxes from the Jewish population there (1904-14).
2) Documents related to the reconstruction and construction of synagogues in the village of Medyka (1904) and the city of Radymno (1916) (fundraising permits, expense reports, etc.).
3) Materials on elections to the boards and councils of the Jewish communities of the cities of Brzozów, Bolechów, Dolina, Leżajsk, Mariampol, Radymno, Rozwadów, the town of Otynia, the village of Nowi Strilyschtscha (Strzeliska Nowe), and others, and on the hearing of complaints regarding violations of election laws. In particular, there is an announcement of the time and place of elections to the board of the Jewish religious community of the city of Dolina (1907); a list of persons admitted to vote in elections for the council of the Jewish religious community of the town of Otynia (1909); a notification by the starostwo in Tłumacz of elections for a new council of the Jewish religious community of the town of Otynia (28 September 1911); a notification of the starostwo in Tłumacz to the Galician Viceroyalty in Lemberg/Lwów to the effect that the collective complaint of Haskell Rinzler and others regarding conduct of the election of the council of the Jewish religious community in the town of Otynia that took place 27-28 September 1911 had been dismissed (1912); etc.
4) Materials on the establishment of separate Jewish communities of the city of Borysław, the village of Żółtańce (Schowtanzi/Zhovtantsy) etc., that had formerly belonged to larger community associations (as so-called branches thereof); these materials include protests lodged by neighbouring “branch” communities that belonged to such associations; lists of residents and taxpayers; etc. (1906-18).
5) There are several documents pertaining to the activities of rabbis: on the replacement of Bolechów Rabbi Haskell Landau upon his stepping down; on the appointment of 15 trustees to elect a rabbi for the Jewish community of Tarnopol (1910-13); etc.
6) Documents on duties and tax collection and on financial abuses in Jewish communities (committed in the course of charging fees for using mikvehs and for burial in cemeteries in the cities of Brody, Kołomyja, Czortków, etc.) (1915-18). 7) There are also reports by the Foundation to Support Jewish Schools in Galicia and Bukovina (1915-18); materials on the awarding of the deputy chair (in Polish, wiceprezes, the vice president) of the Jewish community in Lemberg/Lwów, Jacob Diamand, with the military cross for his public service (1917); etc.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Established in 1849, the Ministry of Religion and Education had oversight of the activities of religious organisations in the Habsburg monarchy and institutions involved in the restoration of monuments. It also supervised educational institutions, including Jewish ones, and regional school councils. It ceased operations in Galicia in 1918, when this territory once again became part of Poland.
