- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Lemberg (Lwów, Lviv) Archival Administration was established in August 1941 by the German occupation authorities. Dr. Hans Göring was appointed its director by the Directorate of Archives of the governor-general in Krakow. This Organisation was a separate institution until 31 March 1943, subordinate to the Office of the Administrative Chief (Amtschef), and was subsequently merged with the main department thereof. The Lemberg Archival Administration carried out operations as instructed by the Directorate of Archives of the governor-general in Krakow, which ordered that all materials housed in archives of Western Ukraine by the Soviet Archival Administration in 1939-41 be returned to agency archives; that documentary materials be selected for the archive of the governor-general in Krakow; and that German researchers be assisted and provided with requisite information for these purposes. In connection with the changed situation at the front and the advance of Soviet forces in late 1944, the Archival Administration ceased operations here and relocated to Krakow, then in early 1945 to Berlin.
